Biography:

Mihail Lucian Birsa is a distinguished university professor in the Faculty of Chemistry at "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iasi, Romania. With an extensive career in academia, he has made significant contributions to the field of organic chemistry, particularly in the areas of organic synthesis, cyclophanes, acetylenes, allenes, sulfur compounds, carbanions, and elimination reactions.

Born on August 9, 1970, in Adjud, Vrancea, Romania, Professor Birsa pursued his academic studies at the Faculty of Chemistry at "Al. I. Cuza" University of Iasi. He completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry with a specialization in organic chemistry between 1990 and 1995. Following this, he earned a Master’s degree in "Chemistry of Heterocycles" in 1996. His academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. in 2000, followed by his habilitation in 2015, both from the same prestigious institution.

Professor Birsa's career at "Al. I. Cuza" University began in 1996, where he held various academic positions. Initially serving as a preparator, he advanced to assistant, lecturer, and associate professor before becoming a full professor in the Department of Chemistry in 2015. Since 2008, he has also held the role of Head of the Chemistry Department at the university.

Professor Birsa’s research career has been enriched by prestigious fellowships, including two from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which allowed him to collaborate at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. His international experience includes a two-year fellowship at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, as well as several return fellowships to Braunschweig. In addition to his academic work, Professor Birsa has served as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig from 2006 to 2019.

In addition to his academic appointments, Professor Birsa is a member of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and has contributed extensively to scientific literature, including 41 book chapters, 125 scientific papers, and an international patent. His works have earned him recognition, including an H-index of 24 with over 1,000 citations.

Professor Birsa's expertise has been sought globally, with his research being widely cited in the scientific community. He is fluent in English and has made substantial contributions to organic chemistry education and research.
